The Vital Role of Hair and Makeup Artists in Film and Video Production
When people think of hair and makeup, their minds often jump to major movie productions. But the truth is, hair and makeup play a crucial role in all types of visual storytelling, including smaller-scale projects like on-line or localTV ads. These elements can greatly boost the professionalism and impact of the image and story-telling, regardless of its size.
Whether you’re creating a national campaign or a local spot, the right hair and makeup can elevate the overall look, making your talent look polished, camera-ready, and aligned with your brand’s message. It ensures consistency across scenes and helps capture the attention of your audience. Even in short, 30-second local ads, attention to these details can be the difference between looking amateur and achieving a high-quality, professional feel.
So, when planning your next video project—whether it’s for a big-budget film or a quick ad—don’t overlook the power of hair and makeup.

Featuring Local Talent: Amore Monet
We spoke with Amore Monet, a talented local hair and makeup artist, and asked, “What do viewers notice when a subject on screen hasn’t had proper hair and makeup, and how can it affect the overall perception of the video?” Here’s what she shared:
“I’m being asked an interview question about makeup and hair on screen. From my experience, not having a professional makeup artist/hair stylist can affect a video in many ways.
First, having a professional who specializes in the way someone appears on screen can be a huge confidence boost to the talent/subject. When they know and feel like they look good, they perform better. Confidence is definitely exuded through the screen.
A professional makeup artist/hair stylist is also aware of lighting and angles that may enhance blemishes or certain features that need to be either concealed or enhanced. Oftentimes, talent will have discoloration in the skin, so we neutralize tones to make it not only easier on the post-editing process but also to not confuse the client as to whether there was a lighting/color issue on the video.
Continuity is important because we make sure that everything about the talent stays consistent between takes, which not only eliminates the distraction of something being “different” between takes but also cuts down on editing time, which then saves money as well.
Not to mention, a professional MUAH is paying attention to out-of-place hair, fluid secretion, dry skin, sweat, dry lips, and continuity.“

In conclusion, whether for a big film or a small business video, a hair and makeup artist is essential for adding professionalism and enhancing the final product.
